Our encounters with pigeons are often brief, despite the extensive presence they hold within our urban landscape.
Their reputation as a public nuisance transcend borders and such pervasiveness has without a doubt, demonstrated their innate abilities to take full advantage of humanized environment.
If you see one, there are more is an installation work, which illustrates a detached fascination with the hardy feral creatures; pigeons.
The scene of the Hawker Center sets the tone for the installation to invoke a sense of familiarity for the audience to reflect upon their encounters with the pigeons accompanied with audio containing a haphazard mix of sounds from pigeons to the mixed responses gathered from people/articles, as well as mixed studies attempts at displacing the image we are often presented with of the pigeons– creating a place for further contemplation on the brief and momentary experience with the pigeons on daily basis.
By exaggerating the re-created scenario that is a common sight in our daily life, the tension re-enacted in the work highlights the process of naturalization - the response in regards to the knowledge we have of things, which is often rewritten and continually reconstructed, as we grow more desensitized towards our surroundings.
Without invoking its physical presence, the work seeks to reconstruct our image of the pigeon through glimpses at our impressions of these creatures and reframe our perception, which has been informed by abstract thoughts.
