Inspired by the use of Foley — a cinematic technique used to recreate sounds using unconventional materials, the work looks into the fictionalization of our environment through the narratives of sound. Based on environmental audio samples, the work imitates the ambience and sound gestures of nature through the alteration/ interaction of everyday objects in the attempt to domesticate what we deem as noise in our urban city.
Through this process of translation, sounds often dismissed as urban “noise” begin to surface as quiet traces of ecological life persisting within a built environment. For this iteration, the installation turns its attention to the calls of koels and cicadas - species deeply embedded within Singapore’s everyday soundscape yet rarely visually encountered. Their distinctive calls are mechanically reconstructed through a series of kinetic sound devices that activate intermittently within the space. Rather than producing a seamless simulation of nature, these fragmented sonic gestures mirror the ways non-human life subtly punctuates the rhythms of the city.
